Family Enterprise

The Wates family enterprise was established by Edward Wates in 1897. The company is now owned by a combination of the third and fourth generations of the family. Wates Group, the family’s major interest, is one of the largest privately-owned building and development businesses in the UK, with sales of £950m and over 2,000 employees. Through the generations the family has owned successful businesses in other spheres including health and fitness, estate agency and commercial property. As a wholly privately-owned concern, Wates is able to take a long term perspective on its investments, ensuring they have the optimum opportunity to prosper and grow, free of the short term expectations so often associated with publicly quoted businesses. Throughout its history Wates has placed particular value on partnership with other families and organisations. The tradition is being continued with Cape Verde Capital.
